Smart Road 4.0 is an innovative IoT research and development project for the improvement of mobility and road safety. Through the creation of a V2X (vehicle to everything) corridor that uses DSRC (dedicated short-range communication) for self-driving vehicles. Thanks to an evolved station of communicating sensors, a multitude of tests and performance optimization are made possible.

 

The Project, whose total value is more than one million Euros (€ 1,114,255.37), was developed by T.net thanks also to the co-financing (contribution to T.net € 283,957.96 out of € 676,090.37) by the European Union, the Italian State and the Region Sicily (as part of the Op Erdf Sicily 2014-2020), and in partnership with some research groups of the DIEEI (Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering) of the University of Catania and the CNIT (National Interuniversity Consortium for Telecommunications).

Smart Road 4.0 uses a multimodal approach, applying processing algorithms on data from multiple sensors (data fusion), to obtain very precise performance in the three components of the environmental values measured (amplitude, time and space).

 

 

The implemented V2X corridor uses advanced roaming algorithms.

The test bed has been realised in the area of the city of Taormina, in Sicily.

The advantages and features of Smart Road 4.0

It represents a reference model in the realization of a latest generation ITS system and in particular it allows to test:

The connection between vehicles and the road infrastructure

The connection between the data collected by sensors, the road infrastructure and vehicles

The security features of the protocols used

Application level presentation of data in a standard and “managed” way

Network performance in consideration of vehicle speeds, much higher than in the city, bound to the required safety and protection specifications

The management of Big Data, Data Harvesting, Cognitive and Predictive Software
